Job Description

The Ambition

Pushkin Press is expanding its presence in the United States, and we are looking for an entrepreneurial Senior or Executive Editor to spearhead our American acquisitions strategy. Building on our recent successes, we aim to become a go-to US home for high-quality literary fiction and narrative non-fiction.

This is a unique opportunity to play a fundamental role in growing and developing an acclaimed international publisher within the US market.

The Role

As our lead US-based editor, you will be the bridge between our London headquarters and the American literary landscape. You will be responsible for:

  • Acquisitions: Identifying and acquiring 8–12 new titles per year. Your focus will be primarily on fiction and non-fiction for Pushkin Press as well as for the Steerforth Press imprint.
  • Editorial: Performing all editorial functions, including structural and line editing, and overseeing books through all phases of publication from acquisition to on-sale and beyond, acting as the in-house liaison with internal departments.
  • Commercial Insight: Developing a clear vision for individual projects, in line with market trends, including launch presentations, cover direction, catalog copy, cover briefs, etc.
  • Relationships: Building and maintaining deep connections with authors, literary agents, and the wider publishing community. Acting as the representative for Pushkin Press when required.
  • Strategic Thinking: Driving the US acquisitions strategy and developing plans for growth.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with colleagues in London and Boston to deliver successful publication of titles where US rights have been acquired or where the US market is paramount to the book's success.

Requirements

We are looking for an experienced editor with a sharp eye for quality and a proven track record of commercial and critical success in the US market.

  • Experience: A minimum of 7 years of editorial experience in trade publishing.
  • Network: An established network of US-based agents and authors.
  • Editorial Range: Comfort and expertise in both literary fiction and narrative non-fiction.
  • Communication: Exceptional communication skills to collaborate effectively with the US and UK teams.
  • Vision: The ability to work independently to grow our US publishing, while remaining aligned with Pushkin Press’s identity.

Starting compensation: $80,000 – $100,000 per year + benefits + discretionary bonus eligibility

How to Apply

Please submit your resume and a cover letter detailing your recent acquisitions and your vision for Pushkin Press US to books@pushkinpress.com. The deadline for applications is April 25.
